Whilst being a student of Paul Kuen and Raimund Grumbach in Munich, German baritone Christian Gerhaher was a member of the Opera School of the Hochschule für Musik. In the meantime Christian Gerhaher is professor himself at the Musikhochschule in Munich. Together with Gerold Huber he is setting the standards for lied interpretation: Their recording of Schubert’s Winterreise received the Echo Klassik 2002, and their CD with Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin received the award in 2004, both for best lied-recording. He has since appeared in all major Lied centres such as the London Wigmore Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, Konzerthaus and Musikverein Vienna, and performed regularly at the most important festivals worldwide. In 2006 he received the prestigious NDR Musikpreis at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.

He is busy with a variety of opera projects as freelancer, among other the title role in Monteverdi’s Orfeo as well as Wolfram in Wagner’s Tannhäuser, both at Frankfurt Opera. Under Riccardo Muti, he was Papageno at the Salzburg Festival.

Milestones of his concert career include his collaboration with conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Helmuth Rilling, Fabio Lusi, Riccardo Muti, Simon Rattle, Mariss Jansons and Christian Thielemann. Christian Gerhaher performs regularly with renowned orchestras such as the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
