One of the most active choral emsembles of the Québec City region, the Chœur Les Rhapsodes celebrated their 30th anniversary in 1991-92. During these thirty years, the Chœur Les Rhapsodes have produced and broadcasted a great number of concerts of vocal and instrumental music, performing both sacred and secular works from the Renaissance, the baroque, the classical, romantic and modern eras, as well as works from the world-wide traditional repertoire. The Chœur Les Rhapsodes is made up of about sixty chorus members. Directed successively by Pierre Fréchette, Michel Keable, Louis Lavigueur and Gisèle Pettigrew, the Chœur Les Rhapsodes has been since March 1987 under the musical and artistic direction of André Chiasson. Since 1988, the Chœur Les Rhapsodes offers Québec’s musical public a season that comprises three different programs. These have enabled the Chœur Les Rhapsodes to invite numerous artists and intrumental ensembles from Québec. The regular season is complemented by a summer season which usually bring the opportunity of mounting major productions. In the summer of 1990, for example, the Chœur Les Rhapsodes performed Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at the gala concert of the Festival d’été international de Québec, with the Orchestre des Jeunes du Québec, under the direction of mæstro Alfredo Silipigni. The Chœur Les Rhapsodes has three records to its credit, “Chantons tous Noël,” under the direction of Louis Lavigueur, “Entre le boeuf et l’âne gris,” under the direction of Giselle Pettigrew, and “L’était une frégate,” also conducted by Giselle Pettigrew. After the recording of their second album, which contained original harmonizations by composers from Québec, the Chœur Les Rhapsodes created their own music publishing house, the catalogue of which now contains over forty titles. The distribution of these titles is provided by the Alliance des Chorales du Québec. Financial assistance is given to the Chœur Les Rhapsodes by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Bureau des arts et de la culture de la Ville de Québec.
