Febuary 08, 2011 - AN INSPIRING ANALEKTA WINTER-SPRING SEASON

In the company of recognised Canadian artists, at the Monument National, François Mario Labbé announced the list of recordings that mark Analekta’s winter-spring season.

Launched today, Alain Lefèvre’s new album offers a rare recording of André Mathieu’s Trio and Quintet with Piano, two particularly accomplished works, as well as Chausson’s Concert. The pianist is accompanied by his brother, violinist David Lefèvre, and the members of the Alcan Quartet.

Johann Sebastian Bach will be particularly well represented this season, since four recordings are dedicated to him. On March 1, we will discover the new album of harpsichordist Luc Beauséjour performing his great Passacaglia in C minor and other works on pedal harpsichord, an instrument composed of two independent yet linked harpsichords, devised here by the harpsichord maker Yves Beaupré.

A re-edition of Bach’s suites and partitas, transcribed for harpsichord, played by Dom André Laberge, will also be issued on that date. Among Dom Laberge’s masters are found Bernard Lagacé, Kenneth Gilbert, Xavier Darasse and Gustav Leonhardt. In addition to his duties as a monk and organist at Saint-Benoît-du-Lac Abbey, Dom Laberge spends his time teaching and recording.

On March 8, Helen Callus, judged by American Record Guide as “one of the greatest artists in the world,” for her first Analekta recording, offers a re-reading for viola of Bach’s Suites for Unaccompanied Cello, well-known and cherished works that remain at the very heart of the repertoire of all cellists and violists.

Let us recall that Bach was also one of the composers highlighted in violinist James Ehnes’ recent compilation, launched last January 25. It includes works by Kreisler, Saint-Saëns, Dvořák and Massenet.

On March 22, we will also find the harpist Valérie Milot in her third recording on the Analekta label, conceived as an invitation to span the 20th century and discover the harp’s multiple aspects. You will hear her play solo in Tailleferre’s Sonata, a key work of the harp repertoire, in duo in works by Philippe Hersant and the Canadian composer Murray Schafer, as well as in an arrangement for quintet of Ravel’s Sonatina and in Jean Françaix’s Second Quintet.

It is also on that day that the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, under the direction of Music Director Kent Nagano, will once again explore Beethoven’s universe in a recording under the topic of “Gods, Heroes and Men,” that includes his Symphony No. 3, “Eroica” and extracts from the music of the ballet The Creatures of Prometheus. As a complement to the album, the text by renowned author Yann Martel inspired by this work and narrated by French actor Lambert Wilson, will be downloadable exclusively on the ANALEKTA.COM digital store. This recording is the fifth by the Orchestre on the Analekta label and the second dedicated to Beethoven.

Acclaimed on the world’s greatest opera stages, Joseph Rouleau has sung with the greatest stars of his time: Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland, Maria Callas and many others. Drawing from the imposing record archives of the bass from Matane, on March 15, Analekta will offer a 3 CD box intended as a retrospective of his dazzling career. You will, in particular, be able to hear Joseph Rouleau sing the title role in extracts from Boito’s Mefistofele, in Ravel’s Don Quichotte à Dulcinée, in songs by Duparc and Fauré, in Brahms’ Four Serious Songs and Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death.

Although the chamber music repertoire is rather vast, the grouping of violin and cello is not the most patronised by composers. Yet, some, especially in the 20th century, were inspired by the complementary tones of those two instruments. On March 29, we will discover four of the most beautiful achievements in the genre, written by Honneger, Schulhoff and Martinu, and performed by violinist Olivier Thouin and cellist Yegor Dyachkov.

The Ensemble Constantinople will launch its first album, Early Dreams, a dialogue among the baroque guitar, Persian setar, voice, viola da gamba and percussion. Intermingled will be baroque music, Mexico and the singular destiny of the first great Latin American poetess, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz.

Before Easter, the oboist John Abberger and the ensemble Four Centuries of Bach will offer a series of re-readings inspired by Overtures BWV 1067 and 1069.

In May, just in time for the 10th edition of the Montreal International Musical Competition, you will hear the previous edition’s First Prize winner, the young violinist Benjamin Beilman, demonstrating remarkable maturity, in Prokofiev’s sonatas.

Last January 25, Analekta was equally proud to welcome the Duo Gaulin-Riverin among its artists. In the album Brillance, recently issued, the duo performs seven 20th century works for saxophone and piano, revealing how the tonal colours of the two instruments complement each other.

Nominations for Angèle Dubeau & La Pietà, Ensemble Caprice and Gryphon Trio

Montreal, February 2, 2011 – ANALEKTA is proud to announce that three of its recordings are nominated for a JUNO in the categories “Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble or Soloist(s) with Large Ensemble Accompaniment”, “Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral Performance” and “Classical Album of the Year: Solo or Chamber Ensemble”. These nominations featuring our finest Canadian musicians confirm the quality and diversity of the recordings produced by ANALEKTA. The winners will be announced on March 27, at a ceremony to be held at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre (broadcast on the CTV network).

In the category “Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble or Soloist(s) with Large Ensemble Accompaniment”, the latest instalment in the Portrait series by Angèle Dubeau & La Pietà devoted to Arvo Pärt convinced the jury. The album comprises some of the composer’s masterworks, including his Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, for string orchestra and tubular bell, Tabula Rasa, a fragmented Baroque concerto grosso, as well as Spiegel im Spiegel, one of his most performed works. Let’s remember that the first in the series dedicated to Philip Glass also got nomination at last year’s JUNO Awards.

In the category “Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral Performance”, Ensemble Caprice’s Salsa baroque got a nomination. Let’s recall that Ensemble Caprice’s CD Gloria! Vivaldi’s Angels (ANALEKTA) won the JUNO in 2009. As well, just a few days ago, the Conseil québécois de la musique saluted the Ensemble’s work by rewarding it with the “Artist of the Year” title at the Prix Opus.

In the category “Classical Album of the Year: Solo or Chamber Ensemble”, the last in the series devoted by the Gryphon Trio to Beethoven’s Piano Trios was nominated.
Release date : February 1st, 2011

With this new Analekta album, pianist Alain Lefèvre offers a rare recording of André Mathieu’s Piano Trio, written more than 15 years after the first recital that was to change the composer’s life forever and of his Piano Quintet, his final work. Alain Lefèvre wants the audience to discover a masterful composer, who privileges a musical language in the tradition of the great French schools, anchored in the 20th century. Chausson’s Concert, a masterwork of the chamber repertoire, is also featured, a true concerto for piano and violin, with the two solo parts projected against the background of a string quartet. Alain Lefèvre is joined here by his brother, violinist David Lefèvre, and members of the Alcan Quartet.

Comprised of two movements that are at once complementary and contrasting, the Piano Trio shows Mathieu at the height of his powers. “With this work, the composer has entered the pantheon of great composers. The piece does not merely repeat what those before him have said, it says what only Mathieu can say, and he expresses it in a language whose syntax is the very image of the work’s spiritual substance,” wrote Jean Vallerand, respected music critic for Le Devoir, after hearing the work performed in 1952.

Mathieu’s last masterwork, spangled with remarkable technical difficulties, the Piano Quintet employs contrasts, even within sections, that oscillate between powerful drama and an almost naïve charm.

A dense and virtuosic work, representative of Chausson’s writing, the Concert was premiered in Brussels in 1892 by Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe (its dedicatee), the members of the Ysaÿe Quartet, and pianist Auguste Pierret. It soon was to become a most popular work.

Acclaimed as a “hero” (Los Angeles Times), a “spectacular pianist” (Fanfare), and a “smashing performer” (Washington Post), Montreal pianist Alain Lefèvre pursues a sparkling international career. Chevalier of the National Order of Quebec and Chevalier of the Pléiade Order, Alain Lefèvre is also winner of seven Felix Awards. He has revived the music of André Mathieu, forgotten genius, composer and pianist once called the “Canadian Mozart”. Alain Lefèvre won a JUNO Award 2010 for his recording with the London Mozart Players, featuring the CD premiere of André Mathieu’s Concertino No.2.

Violinist David Lefèvre is hailed for his talent, passion and musical versatility. While pursuing his solo and chamber music career, David Lefèvre was Principal Concertmaster with the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse from 1993 to 1999. He is currently holding the same position with the Orchestre philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and is Guest Concertmaster of the Lisbon Gulbenkian Orchestra.

The Alcan Quartet — violinists Laura Andriani and Nathalie Camus, violist Luc Beauchemin, and cellist David Ellis — has developed a reputation for excellence throughout Canada and internationally since its formation over twenty years ago. The quartet’s originality, contagious enthusiasm, unique sonority, and remarkable cohesion have all contributed to its long term success. Critics agree that, both on stage and in the recording studio, the Alcan Quartet possesses the qualities that characterize the best ensembles of its kind: a recognizable personality, a homogeneous sound, and elegant style.

LYNE FORTIN, SOPRANO

ESTHER GONTHIER, PIANO

Release date : October 5, 2010

As one of Canada's foremost sopranos, Lyne Fortin is as much at ease on the greatest operas stages that as guest with orchestras or in recital. Here, she invites us on a visit of the Gardens of Spain, in a program that includes new takes on popular old songs dressed up in the shades of Joaquín Nin or Fernando Obradors, as well as troublingly beautiful young girls whom Richard Strauss transforms into flowers.

At the end of the 19th century, moved by a burgeoning of national sentiment and becoming fully aware of the musical genius emerging from their land—a realization magnified even further by Spanish-styled works from the French composers Delibes, Bizet, Lalo, Chabrier, and Ravel—Spanish musicians finally achieved emancipation. Spanish folklore began to appear in works, numerous regional references were employed and Castilian, Catalonian, and Andalusian traditions were linked. At the same time, Hugo Wolf set 44 Spanish poems of the 16th and 17th centuries to music. “What I am writing now, I write for the future,” wrote Wolf in a letter. “There has not been anything like it since Schubert and Schumann.”
Lyne Fortin leads an exceptional career. She has appeared with the Opéra de Montréal in the title roles of Agrippina, Thais, La Traviata and Roméo et Juliette and, in Europe, with the Vlaamse Opera as Madame de Tourvel in the world premiere of a new opera based on Dangerous Liaisons and as Madame Lidoine in Dialogues of the Carmelites. She appeared in the Canadian premiere of McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio on CBC Television and can also be heard on a Christmas recording with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec for which she received a “Felix” at the ADISQ Gala and a recording of Mozart arias for Analekta.
Following her studies at the Université Laval and the Université de Montréal, Esther Gonthier perfected her vocal coaching technique in France under Janine Reiss. Since that time, she is actively pursuing her activities as a coach, concert pianist and choir master.

Release date : September 7, 2010

Montreal, September 7 2010 ― As part of a widely-toured duo recital program entitled “Songs of Venus and Mars” with mezzo-soprano Catherine Robbin and pianist Leslie De’Ath, bass-baritone Daniel Lichti sang several of the songs from Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch. To prolong the magic felt on the concert stage, the partners quite naturally decided to record the collection.

The miniature vignettes of the Italian Songbook constitute Wolf’s last major contribution to the lied, before his early death.
