Album information
For this EP, Carl Mayotte chose to deliver two versions of the very famous Duke Ellington’s song, In a sentimental mood, composed in 1935. The first one, live, is a brilliant demonstration of the bassist’s sense of groove, sublimated by the synths, saxophone, drums and electric guitar that accompany him. The second, entitled Sentimentale, is recorded in the studio and presented with a French text, interpreted by Jeanne Laforêt. Carl Mayotte plays a fretless bass, a signature instrument of 1980s jazz fusion, a genre that he renews with a beautiful modernity.
If the bass is often considered as an accompaniment instrument, Carl Mayotte proposes to put it forward and to create new avenues for it, taking the paths of jazz fusion and improvisation.
