Can angel music actually be heard? A number of composers have thought so. Whether raising a song of thanks to the Virgin, like Vivaldi, de Victoria, Gounod and Busto; beseeching repose for the soul, like Bach; summoning the music directly, like César Franck in his Panis angelicus, they’ve managed over the years to dedicate pages to it that are sometimes sweetly ethereal and sometimes of a rare profundity, and which continue to move us and to uplift us. After all, hearing the music of the angels – is that not, in some way, equivalent to communing with the goodness, joy, love and peace that have a home already in our hearts?
