Renowned for her intelligent musicality and great sensitivity, Canadian mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne has quickly made a name for herself on the world’s greatest stages. Her repertoire extends from Baroque to contemporary music, with a predilection for the music of Handel, Mozart, Rossini and Berlioz.

She has performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Siebel (Gounod’s Faust), Kuchtik (Dvo?ák’s Rusalka), and Stéphano (Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette); at the Royal Opera House in London as Aloès (Chabrier’s L’Étoile); at the Operhaus in Zurich as Annio (Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito); at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse as Béatrice (Berlioz’ Béatrice et Bénédict); at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as Concepción (Ravel’s L’heure Espagnole); at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées as Elvira (Mozart’s Don Giovanni); and at the Opéra de Lyon as Robin-Luron (Offenbach’s Le Roi Carotte) as well as Dutch National Opera; and at the BBC Proms.

She has also played Romeo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Opéra de Reims, the Child in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Marguerite in Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust, and Miranda in Thomas Adès’ The Tempest, the latter two being productions of Robert Lepage at the Festival d’opéra de Québec, to name a few.

She has also sung Fragoletto in Offenbach’s Les Brigands at the Opéra-Comique de Paris; Béatrice in Béatrice et Bénédict at Boston Opera House; Lazuli in Chabrier’s L’Étoile at the New York City Opera; Cherubino in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro at the Vancouver Opera, the Opéra de Montréal and the New Orleans Opera; Cendrillon in Massenet’s opera of the same name at the Opéra de Marseille and the Opéra de Montréal; Zerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Opéra d’Avignon; Elisa in Handel’s Tolomeo at the Glimmerglass Opera; Rosine in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville at the Minnesota Opera, the Opéra de Montréal, and with the Orlando Philharmonic; and the title role of Rossini’s La Cenerentola at the Florida Grand Opera, the Glimmerglass Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria.

She has also performed concerts and recitals in Canada, the United States, Asia and Europe, most notably in Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in New York, at the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto in Japan and at the San Sebastian Festival in Spain alongside such eminent maestros as Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Michael Tilson Thomas, Placido Domingo, Charles Dutoit, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Sir Roger Norrington.

In 2006, she recorded Shéhérazade and the role of the Child in L’Enfant et les sortilèges, two works by Ravel, nominated for “Best Classical Album” at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Her first solo recording, dedicated to Gustav and Alma Mahler, was a finalist for “Album of the Year – Classical/vocal” at the 2012 ADISQ Awards. She also took part in the recording of the complete songs of Poulenc. In 2014, she recorded Handel & Porpora: The London Years, with harpsichordist Luc Beauséjour on the Analekta label, which was nominated for a Juno Award and an International Classical Music Award.

Hailing from Dolbeau-Mistassini, Julie Boulianne earned degrees from the Juilliard School of Music in New York and McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. She has won a number of major awards. In 2012, the Conseil québécois de la musique recognized her international career with an Opus Prize for international achievement. A winner of the Chambre Professionnelle des Directions d’Opéra prize, awarded to the most promising finalist at the Concours musical international de Montréal, Julie Boulianne also won first prize at the Joy in Singing Competition in New York and the Silverman Prize, awarded by the International Vocal Art Institute. For a number of years, she has been supported by the Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation and the Canada Council for the Arts.
