Born in Lévis, Québec, Esther Gonthier is recognized as one of the most versatile pianists in Canada. Following her studies at the Université Laval and the Université de Montréal, she perfected her vocal coaching technique in France under Janine Reiss. Since that time, she is actively persuing her activities as a coach, concert pianist and choir master.
Esther Gonthier is highly regarded in the vocal art world due to her extensive repertoire of over 80 operas. She works regularly for the Opéra de Montréal, the Opéra de Québec, the Opéra-théâtre de Metz, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal, and the Festival de Lanaudière. She is assisted many well-known maestros including Jean-Claude Casadesus, Franz-Paul Decker, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Eliahu Inbal, Michel Plasson, Charles Dutois and Kent Nagano. She has also worked with internationally reputed soloists such as Nancy Argenta, Juliane Banse, Mary Dunleavy, Kiri Te Kanawa, Susan Platts, Federica von Stade, and she takes great pleasure in performing on the same stage as Marc Hervieux, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Lyne Fortin and Marie-José Lord.
Esther Gonthier also works with voice students at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, at McGill University, at Université de Montréal and at l’Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal.
