Hélène Guilmette

Acclaimed for her luminous tone, her exemplary diction, her refined musicianship and her remarkable stage presence, Canadian soprano Hélène Guilmette has been leading a spectacular international career since she won Second Prize at the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition of Belgium in 2004. She is equally at ease in a vast range of repertoire, from baroque (Rameau and Handel) to classical (Glück and Mozart) and French repertoire Massenet, Poulenc and Gounod). Over the years, she has been heard in the roles of Pamina (Magic Flute) in Brussels; Mélisande (Ariane et Barbe-bleue, Dukas) and Amour (Orphée et Eurydice, Glu?ck) at the Paris Opera; Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro, Mozart) in Lille, Montreal, Montpellier and at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées; Sophie (Werther, Massenet) in Brussels, Strasbourg, Lille and at the Paris Opera; Thérèse (Les Mamelles de Tirésias, Poulenc) in Lyon and at the Paris Opéra Comique; Constance (Dialogues des Carmélites, Poulenc) in Munich, Nice, Toronto; besides taking on the role of Blanche de la Force in Lyon; Oriane (J-C Bach’s Amadis de Gaule) at the Royal Opera of Versailles and Opéra Comique; Nadia (Veuve joyeuse, Lehár) also at the Opéra Comique; Pedro (Don Quichotte, Massenet) in Tokyo; Eurydice (Orphée et Eurydice) in Angers-Nantes; Hébé, Phani and Fatime (Rameau’s Les Indes Galantes) in Toulouse. Ms. Guilmette also sang in recital and in concert at the Palais des Beaux arts in Brussels, the Concertgebow in Amsterdam, the Teatro Colòn in Buenos Aires, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Schwarzenberg’s Schubertiade, in works including Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Andreas Scholl, Poulenc’s Gloria, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C minor, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4.

She has also sung under the direction of well-known conductors such as Ottavio Dantone, Emmanuelle Haïm, Sigiswald Kuijken, Bernard Labadie, Ludovic Morlot, Kent Nagano, Michel Plasson, Christophe Rousset, and Marcello Viotti and has collaborated with several renowned stage directors such as Robert Carsen, Mariame Clément, Christophe Honoré, Benoît Jacquot, Guy Joosten, Macha Makeïeff, Piero Faggioni, Laura Scozzi, Jean-François Sivadier, Dmitry Tcherniakov and Jean-Paul Scarpitta.

Among her projects, let’s mention roles in Chabrier’s L’Étoile (Laoula) at Covent Garden, Béatrice et Bénédict (Héro) at the Glyndebourne Festival, Dido and Aeneas (Belinda) at Carnegie Hall, Orfeo ed Eurydice (Eurydice) at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Poulenc’s Stabat Mater at the Accademia nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Roma and Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias with the BBC Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London.

Holding a degree in music education and piano from Université Laval, Guilmette did her vocal training with Marlena Malas in New York. She has received the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation.
