Orchestre de l’Opéra de Montréal
L’Opéra de Montréal was established in January of 1980. Under the artistic direction of Jean-Paul Jeannotte, the Company inaugurated its first season with Tosca, followed by Così fan tutte and La Traviata. As early as 1981-82, the Company was producing four productions per season. In 1988, Bernard Uzan, former General and Artistic Director of the Tulsa Opera Company, was named General Director in Montréal. In 1989, he became Artistic Director as well and has since assumed both positions. In the past fifteen years, L’Opéra de Montréal has presented 55 operas from the French, Italian, German and Russian repertoires, to over 1 300 000 spectators at Place des Arts. L’Opéra de Montréal’s productions have been broadcast on radio and / or television to a total audience of over 20 million people. The 1994-95 season marked the Company’s 15th anniversary. L’Opéra de Montréal now produces seven productions a season (compared to the initial three), making it one of the eight most signif- icant opera companies in North America.
