Her voice has been described as luminous, dazzling and shining and her acting witty, delightful, and feisty, Shannon Mercer is an artist of uncommon musical artistry, whose passion for her art form embraces repertoire ranging from early to contemporary music.
Opera roles include Pamina, Rosina, Despina, Sesto, and Elvira with companies across Canada, and her highly acclaimed French debut with l’Opéra national de Montpellier in the title role of Marin Marais’ Sémélé, recorded for the Glossa label. She made her London debut in The Midnight Court with Queen of Puddings, returning to perform in Not the Messiah with Monty Python legend Eric Idle at the Royal Albert Hall, which was broadcast in movie theatres across Europe and is now on DVD.
Ms. Mercer’s discography includes Salsa Baroque, O Viva Rosa, one of the first recordings entirely devoted to Francesca Caccini, the JUNO nominated Bach and the Liturgical Year, Wales ~ The Land of Song, Mondonville, and English Fancy, all on Analekta. Her previous partnership with Ensemble Caprice Gloria! Vivaldi’s Angels won the 2009 JUNO Award. Shannon has also recorded Sémélé by Marin Marais (Glossa) conducted by Hervé Niquet. She has appeared in Alexina Louie’s comic opera Burnt Toast, available on DVD, and is the ‘voice’ of Minister Blais Grenier in Mulroney: The Opera, also composed by Alexina Louie.
